Writers march to their own drummer. Don’t listen to any writer that says you have to write a certain way. Every writer has their own method, and it’s not always set in stone. It can change. This is especially true for multiple writing projects.
Most writers have ideas hit them every day of the year. They note them for future use, but a few get picked up by the muse. The creative torture begins.
You’ll find yourself writing the one story while another one pounds away in your head demanding to be let out. You want to focus on the story in front of you, but you can’t. The result? Confirmed craziness or multiple writing projects.
I get started on the main writing project. I get a ways into it before I pull up another project. Let me give you an example of what I’m doing now. I’ve got fourteen writing projects going on at one time. This doesn’t include the editing that I’m doing.
My main focus is the final book of the Connections series. I’m at 39,000 words right now. In addition to that, I have thirteen other stories that I have up at all time. I typically keep them all up on my computer. When I’m in a writing mood, I set targets. I write a thousand words on my main story. I then move on to the others writing around a hundred words each. Then I repeat it.
Yes, it does sound confusing. It drives some of my writer friends crazy, but sometimes that is how my mind works. I don’t get confused on plot or characters. It helps me feel like I’m getting somewhere on all my stories.
Then there are the days when that just won’t cut it. My mind will not accept that method of managing multiple writing projects. There are some days that a story just does nothing for me. I save it and close it. Time for that story to ferment for a while. Then I step away from writing for a day or so and focus on reading.Every author has her own way of managing multiple projects. She might only have two up or have a dozen. She might literally work on them at the same time or meet a goal on one and move to another. It all depends on the muse. Whatever the muse dictates, the author has to follow.
